Programme notes

Atoms, particles, samples, grains, etc. Depending on the point of view everything can be one, or be one of many. A ray of light is one but composed of many particles. This is true not only with light but with everything we know about this physical world. A sound is a set of small particles, our own body is made of cells, our own society is composed of people, etc. Scientists will probably disagree with me, but I can only conclude that reality depends on our perception. A set of sound particles, are they a single sound or a cluster of small joints? I don't know, it depends, from that, I just mused all this thought.

Text and Voice by Júlia Durand

You are not so different from music,
You are not so different from noise.
All of it particles, all of it grains forming others
A mess of uncertain paths, a confusion of stumbling bodies,
Speaking and hurting in vibrations, bleeding in waves,
Every second slipping down the hourglass,
Every grain of person slipping between the crowd.
The air moves with the sand of sound, and we move with it,
Not elegantly, but in the clumsy tripping along of every human thing.
The stirring that music leaves behind gathers like dust…
… And we dust off the particles of person that settle on us.
We carve into each other’s time, but there’s no time between us and a handful of dirt.
Like sound we settle on those who hear, leaving behind the grain of our voice,
And we keep hesitating forward, all of it pieces spilled and tangled together,
Not so different from music,
Not so different from noise.
